What is an STC Rating?

The Sound Transmission Class (STC) rating of a door quantifies the relative sound insulating performance of the door/frame assembly. It is derived in accordance with ASTM test standard E90-75 as a result of a 2 room test where the only significant sound transmission between the rooms is through the test specimen. This standardized lab test allows for performance comparisons of competing products. It is important not to compare or confuse STC ratings for a door leaf vs. a complete door assembly with all of its seals. Door leaf STC ratings may overstate acoustic performance by as much as 10 to 15 STC points when compared to testing the complete assembly. Door STC ratings must be comparable to the wall, floor and ceiling STC values to maintain consistent performance.
